PAUL CLUVER WINES HOST TOP INTERNATIONAL ACTS AT AMPHITHEATRE
The 12th Paul Cluver Forest Amphitheatre concert season starts on 4 December 2010 until 12 March 2011. The line-up for this season includes The Parlotones, Nataniel, Arno Carstens, Imogen Heap, Watershed, Stef Bos and Freshly Ground.
While the line-up to date has been predominantly South African, this year it includes two international artists namely Imogen Heap and Stef Bos.
Imogen Heap is a Grammy Award winning multi-instrumentalist from the UK. She will be on tour in South Africa for the first time. Stef Bos, the Dutch balladeer, now residing part time in RSA, is a return visitor to the amphitheatre. He will be performing "Gelukkig" with the "Februarie Susters" - a local singing foursome who hail from the Paul Cluver farm.
The concert venue is a unique open-air forest amphitheatre, towered by ghost gum trees. It only seats 600 - making it an intimate venue for concert goers and performers alike. Open air, star-lit and unplugged - all the seats are in the "golden circle". Ticket prices range from R175 to R395, depending on the artist.
The amphitheatre was created and built by Dr. Paul Cluver - the pioneer of grape growing and wine making in Elgin. The idea for a forest amphitheatre came to him one winter's morning while walking his dogs through a thicket of eucalyptus trees on the farm. "Inspired by the amphitheatres of Europe I told my son I needed a chain-saw and a bulldozer for a week or two", chuckles Dr. Cluver "and then I built it". The first concert season was hosted by the Cluver family end 1999.
Performances take place on Saturday evenings - weather depending. Cancelled performances are either rescheduled or tickets are refunded. Patrons are encouraged to bring along their own picnic fare or to pre-order picnic hampers. The wines of Paul Cluver are available for sale at the venue.
"If you're not into long queues, traffic jams and vying with 7000 others to find a seat or a view of the stage, then this is the venue for you!" Take a drive to the countryside, to the Paul Cluver Wine estate, Elgin -only 50 minutes from Cape Town CBD, 45 minutes from Stellenbosch and Hermanus, and 20 minutes from Somerset West.
